Exhibit Opening

The opening party for the latest exhibit of the Arts Lounge has just finished. I'm exhausted but I'm happy that it was successful.

I'l post about our featured artist and her work on my next entry but basically the theme of the exhibit was Khmer horoscopes.

We constructed a little canopy and got a fortune teller for our guests to have their palms read, their star signs interpreted and some card readings. It proved popular!

A lot tried it. Here's the fortune teller in action with one of our guests.

To simulate the effect of a starry night we covered the ceiling with black cloth and hanged 2000 pieces of ping-pong balls dipped in silver paint. We started lunchtime and finished around 6pm for the set-up. I'm always amazed how we try to push the team with all the crazy set-up we think of.

It was a nice turn-out of guests given that it's a Tuesday. I'm really happy. Now wish me luck for another sold out show.

Reyum Exhibit 2

Ok, the runnng theme of the exhibit is identity. This piece of folded paper is nice and all but I don't get it how a Naga (mythical snake creature) relates to identity. It's so very Issey Miyake that's why I like it. hehehe

And then you get this painting of a pot or vessel. This one is seriously ugly. And wala din sa identity theme. Hay...

But then you get this traditional portrait, well sort of. It's kinda popular here that type of rendering. The twist is the consumerist take where the dress is filled up with the packaging of a soap brand. Brand+identity.

Pixel drama. Glass shots with colored milk inside. Mother chuva concept. Pwede na.

Di ko na-gets.

But i like the cool pencil shaving media.

This one i like. Very simple pero avant. He made a drawing of Cambodia on the wall. For each province he placed a transitor radio and tuned it to a particular station. What you get is cacophony of sounds. He likens it to what is happening in Cambodia, theres a confusion of what to listen to.

The artist dressed up into certain Cambodian archetypes and had himself photograped in a regular photo shops. The concept is okey but the execution I don't like.

The artist's mother died when he was very young. The only memory he has left of her is 3 photographs. He rendered them in pencil and stacked it together. He said that even though he doesn't know her mother, she is still part of her identity.

The 'blackhole' picture.

But actually it's a shot of cooking oil in a pan. The artist comments on environmental issues, our connection to the stars, our ways and how everything is interelated.

This piece is also nice and well conceptualized. Cracked mirror reflects the video images of Cambodian pop culture. Khmer Rouge propaganda slogans were remixed to Khmer hip-hop music.

The whole set-up. I'm impressed. He totally gets the identity concept.

Nice, a comment on Buddhism. Gold leaf details and installation of those ceremonial bowls. Di ko nagets masyado ang meaning.

This one is wonderful! The video is about the artist showing pictures of their flags and asking them what the flags meant to them. He embroidered flags on the side. Ang ganda, super. I did get his identity concept here. So simple yet so profound.

Winner ang embroidery.

Tracy Emin isdatchu? Hay naku nagpaka-British ang artist na ito. I hate this piece. Kakainis.

Spoon sculpture detail

I also love this piece. The artist photographed through a rolled paper, so the image that you see is partially obscured. It's a collection of everything about her. The artist was the only girl in the group. Basta gets ko sya.

Reyum Gallery Opening

Reyum is an art institution that is funded by several art oriented groups from around the world. They try to develop and nurture the growing artists in Cambodia. This latest opening gathered several artists who attended a workshop about contemporary art. The outcome of the workshop is this exhition.

Utensils and metal chair sculpture.

Lots of people cramped in the small gallery

I kinda like it. Our current exhibit by Loven Ramos has exactly the same materials of utensils and ready-made items from the market. What a coincidence.

I was impressed by this photo. It looks like a shot of a nebula or a black hole. It's actually a shot of cooking oil in a pan. A very environmental face but clever. I love it!

It amused me that they served Khmer kakanin/traditional cakes and fruits to guests. Odiva! Very grassroots and cocktail!

My Blogger is NOT Working!

Yes pips, it's true. I've tried everything and it's not working. The buttons to upload the pictures are missing so I can't post pictures. It's just error on page everytime I refresh or open a new post. And if you haven't noticed my posts are all about the pictures. I don't even blabber that much. So this blog can't continue unless I or some miracle can fix this problem.

On other news, I'm quite alone here in Siem Reap since the Ramos Famille is in Las Islas Filipinas. Loven will be opening an exhibit tomorrow at breathing space at iiideas gallery (ideas shop, 2/f unit 102, first midland office building, gamboa street, legaspi village, 1260 makati city, philippines). Cocktails around 7pm so I hope you pips in Manila could support Loven in there.

Since nobody is home I asked the good pips at my hotel to adopt me for a week. So now I'm staying here. Kinda like a vacation for me also.

Yesterday Loven and Fate called me and they checked out Eairth at Soumak. I've been obsessing about the brand lately and i can't wait to own a piece or two. Asked them to buy me a scarf and a tee. I kindly asked them also to check out Homme et Femme if they stocked the latest Margiela AIDS tee. I collect those and I want to add another one to my lot. Fate told me my friend Rofel sent me a bunch of magazines where my work was featured and I definitely can't wait to check it out. Also, Peer, Michael and Jor-el sent me stuff. A Hussein Chalayan shirt, a Helmut Lang pants, a Dries van Noten top and other branded stuff. Me like! What an early Christmas gift! Or is this the 2007 Christmas gift? Hehehe. I also can't wait to see it. Good thing they know my size and the brands I like. I know, I'm such a brand whore.

Tita Jaki and Tito Butz is coming this May here in Siem Reap. I hope it works fine with my schedule coz I really want to be with them when they are here. I need a break and I usually don't take a break because honestly there's nothing to do. Correction, there are a lot of things to do but it's not fun when your friends are not with you. I won this horse ride at John& Narisa's masquerade party last week and I think I'l be saving those for when they are here.

Let me list the restaurants they should try here:
1. Sugarpalm
2. Meric
3. AHA
4. Ginga
5. Blue Pumpkin
6. the Japanese resto at Sokha Hotel
7. l'Angelo
8. Pho de Paris
9. Mother Guru
10.Angkor Century Lounge
11.Kamasutra
12.Paris Saigon
13.Amansara
14.Bubble Tea
15.BBQ Place

There are other nice places to go to but not for eating. Some only for the ambience and drink, others for coffee and desserts.

The buy at Ambre

I've been looking for a cool waistcoat for the longest time here in Cambodia. I've got one from Henrik Vibskob and I've been using it to dust. So I 'need' it talaga.

They have two styles that I like. This one is like a tuxedo type waistcoat. Japanese wool and silk satin lining. Mahalia Jackson, as what would Ms. Chuvaness say. Hehehe!

This is another style which is much more common yung design. The price is ok and it still uses a less expensive Japanese wool and the same silk satin lining.

I'l be using it a lot and abusing it so I opted to get this.

Phnom Penh Domestic Airport

It's the first time I've been to an airport that looks like a garden with open air areas, pools and tropical design. I actually think it's nice except that it does get hot with the open air thingy.
